Book In The Money: The Simple Options Strategy That Always Beats the Market. Review :

You can't get any simpler than this; buy deep in the money call options on SPY only. Note that I said SPY, not QQQ or IWM. I wrote the author and she mentioned that IWM was much more volatile and showed me a graph to prove her point. Not sure about QQQ, but since this trades only 100 stocks that are mostly "tech" heavy, I would think it would be more volatile. And the DIA has just 30 cap-waited stocks only. I wouldn't even consider trading single stocks with this method.I also asked Ms. Cullen if she waited for a bullish signal first, for example, a cross above the green ichimoku cloud line. She mentioned that she does not bother with that, but does wait if she has seen an unusual increase in share price in the short-term past.Rolling UP and rolling OUT(and doing both at the same time) can be a matter of personal preference, but the author gave me a reasonable goal to shoot for regarding rolling UP my ditm calls and a particular time frame for rolling OUT my ditm calls. Knowing when to take profits and when to buy new call contracts and when to roll up/out are all important keys to to trading this method effectively. You can think of this strategy as a set and check once a week type. The only time you can lose money is in a frank bear market or a black swan event(2008 crash, 9/11 2001 crash, the 2020 covid crash, the 1929 market crash). Even then, you can simply hang on until the crisis is over.Ms. Cullen identifies one easy hands-off way you can trade her strategy called "The Lazy Man's Portfolio". You don't make any adjustments(no rolling up) at all except to sell your about to expire ditm call(s) and buy one or more calls that expires in another year. This can be done, but you have to ride out the above mentioned bad times, such as crashes. She also compares what would have happened using the lazy man's method, the rolling up/out method, and something she calls turbo-charge(you can read about that one, but it's not difficult). The author also talks about a way to get out of the market using two moving averages and how/when to get back in using two other moving averages. You may give up some profit, but you'll stay out of most drawdowns which most of us can't stomach psychologically, since we may not see the light at the end of the tunnel.I've read at least 100 books on options trading, mostly about using covered calls and put selling, iron condors, bull put and bear call credit spreads. Most of these you have to look at each day and seem to have more disadvantages than advantages. You can't get any simpler than buying one or more ditm call(s) and then making sure you know how to adjust your call(s) later as needed. As mentioned above, I wrote the author with specific questions about rolling up/out and she answered them within 24 hours. I think it's worth the $9.99. One more note: if you have traded options before as I have, you may want to skip the introductory chapters to get to the "meat" of the strategy.Good luck to everyone.
What's good about this book is the general bull-market strategy is sound: buying deep in the money (LEAPS, as advocated here) calls at opportune times on an index like the S&P 500 is a great strategy because the extrinsic (aka time premium) element of the options is minimized. "Opportune" (my word, not the author's) is somewhat broadly defined in this book to cover the entire breadth of a bull run, capped with a change in a moving average. What's bad is that the book is rambling, poorly edited, and the text does not come to terms with one of its own stated objectives. Near the beginning of the book, the author alludes to a strategy to exploit bear market conditions. That's called a promise, but there is no such strategy provided in the book, although a defensive selling posture with moving averages is described. Question: Are the author and the editor(s) bored enough with the text not to catch such an error? The author appears to harbor the conviction that buying deep in the money options is a heretofore unexplored approach. The author writes, "Several people to whom I have explained the strategy look disbelieving and say that it can’t possibly work. That it’s so simple there must be a catch. And how come, if it is so simple, that everyone isn’t doing it? There’s a simple answer: I don’t know WHY people aren’t doing it. Presumably they haven’t worked it out. Remember, I had been trading a good 16 years before I worked it out!" Actually, Harrison Roth wrote with aplomb about the virtues of using deep-in-the-money calls in his 1994 classic "LEAPS" (I can say the approach of buying longer-duration deep in the money calls is sound because I tested Harrison Roth's recommendation after reading his book over two decades ago, and continue to get excellent results). Other option authors with a value perspective have tackled this topic. Ultimately, it never hurts to be reminded about more intelligent uses of financial instruments and this approach is a sound one.Addendum: I'm informed the author has requested a couple of times over the past month or so that her readership write more positive reviews than mine to "bury it in positive reviews." That an author resorts to hustling tactics in reaction to an honest review is despicable. Unfortunately, it is also fairly common nowadays, so the buyer should beware.
