I rarely write reviews, but for this one I have to make an exception. I became interested with the concept of a low-fat diet after my parent's experience with a "paleo" type diet. After engaging in a paleo diet, both my mom and dad got their blood work done and had total blood cholesterol of 310 and 220 respectively. Needless to say my dad was pissed because, after doing all of this research online (and doing some kind of bulletproof coffee - adding some kind of butter to it), everything he read stated that eating high fat and cholesterol foods would not raise your blood cholesterol. Now, I didn't see everything they ate but being the meticulous people they are, I am certain they strictly followed the guidelines of the diet.Afterwards, my dad got into the low fat gurus and decided he would try those diets instead, specifically cutting out all animal based meat and dairy (they did not stop eating olive oil). After about 3 months on the diet, they got their blood work redone and my mom's blood cholesterol dropped around 80 points and my dad's went below 200. I have nothing to gain from sharing this information. It appears when you eat a high fat diet, you do so at a significant risk of raising your blood cholesterol. It's possible different people metabolize cholesterol differently and at different times in your life - so maybe this won't be as groundbreaking for other people.Now, for my experience, I was diagnosed with hypertension when I was 23 years old (36 today). The highest I've seen peak was 175/115. I've been on dozens of medication and none could drop me below 145/95. If I exercise, and have the discipline to do the resperate machine, I can drop it to 135/85. I started this specific diet about 2 weeks ago, and cut out all animal based products, dairy, and oil. My diet has consisted of steel cut oatmeal, broccoli/cauliflower/carrots, white and sweet potatoes, beans, fruit, and brown rice/salsa. Today (4/17/18), my blood pressure was 120/77, the lowest I have seen it, really, in forever. I am not truly certain what food I cut out that did it; nonetheless, it worked.Good luck!
This book saved my life. I accidently stumbled upon Dr. Esselstyn's research and recommendations when I was bed ridden with severe blood pressure which was getting worse by the day and I knew that it was just a matter of limited time before I expire. I was 52 years old then. I started the change recommended here in this book. Today, I am on no medicine today. I have lost 18 kgs but the most important fact is that my body composition report says 18% total fat, 9 % visceral fat, and 30 years internal ageing - consistently. These facts do not lie so anyone with heart problem, close your eyes and embrace Dr. Esselstyn's wisdom. I am not particularly religious but I would still say " God Bless Him " !
